The Sacred Heart Preparatory Gators defeated the Carlmont High School Scots 28-7 in the 2019 season opener for both teams at the Gators’ home field on Saturday, August 31, 2019. The Gators looked strong from the outset as they drove into Carlmont’s red zone in the 1st quarter only to have Sacred Heart’s junior quarterback Teddy Purcell fumble the ball to Carlmont. Junior defensive back George Rigas recovered the miscue for the Scots. Purcell redeemed himself later in the 1st quarter with a 37 yard TD strike to senior wide receiver Dante Cacchione. He turned in a nearly flawless day passing by connecting on 14 of 16 passes for 238 yards and one touchdown with no interceptions. The other offensive standout was Purcell’s teammate senior running back Tevita Moimoi who rushed 11 times for 111 yards and two touchdowns.

The Scots offense could not get untracked until late in the 3rd quarter. Carlmont was determined to avoid a shutout and put together a 12 play 80 yard balanced drive which saw sophomore running back Dane Fifita carry the ball 7 times for 25 yards and culminated with a 12 yard touchdown pass from sophomore quarterback Timothy Netane to junior fullback Si’i Tengei at the 11:19 mark in the 4th quarter. However, the key play in the drive came with only 1:59 remaining in the 3rd quarter on fourth down with 12 yards to go on the Scots’ own 35 yard line when Netane completed a 37 yard pass to senior running back Jonaven Kuhn to keep the scoring drive moving down the field.

The Scots’ defense showed why Carlmont can expect solid play against PAL Ocean division opponents later in the season. The defense forced the Gators to turn the ball over twice on downs, and they turned the ball over to the Carlmont offense on a Gator fourth down when they chased Sacred Heart’s punter to the sideline. Carlmont defensive standouts included junior linebacker Si’i Tengei with 7 tackles (three behind the line of scrimmage), senior defensive back Jonaven Kuhn with 6 solo tackles, and senior defensive lineman Steven Talaina with 4 solo tackles plus an 8 yard sack.
